The Beach Bards and Public Observatory Nights Canceled at The Leelanau School For Summer 2020
Glen Arbor, MI
Due to the current COVID-19/Coronavirus Pandemic, The Beach Bards and Public Observatory nights held on The Leelanau School campus in Glen Arbor, have been canceled for the summer of 2020. The health and well being of guests and students is the School’s utmost concern. Out of an abundance of caution and due to the difficulty in ensuring a safe gathering space and shared telescope usage, regretfully these long-standing summer traditions will not occur this year.
The Beach Bards is beloved by many as a delightfully “Up North” experience of shared by heart poetry, storytelling, and music around a community fire ring nestled in the woods along the beach of The Leelanau School. For over 30 years, the open forum with no tech, no screens, and no pages has kept the oral tradition alive by the magic of firelight.
Public Stargazing and Constellation Lessons are also a favorite summer tradition for both experienced astronomers and those simply interested in seeing heavenly objects in bright, brilliant detail, and learning from Norm Wheeler, retired Leelanau School teacher and local authority and guide. Since 1976, area visitors have oohed and aahed at the wonders of the universe they can see through the 14-inch Celestron telescope at The Leelanau School’s Lanphier Observatory which is perched on along the beach of Sleeping Bear Bay.
