Winter Term 2019
Language Immersion in Barcelona
Imagine “living the language” while exploring Barcelona, Madrid and Toledo. From strolling through Las Ramblas, to visiting the Olympic Stadium from 1992, to preparing a Spanish meal and sharing it with a family, to exploring the beautifully impressive Sagrada Familia cathedral, to studying famous Spanish artists while even learning some dance moves; this trip offers it all! Each day will have a theme- like art, history, or food-
that connects the day’s lesson to hands-on activities and conversations with locals. Daily Spanish lessons tailored to individual student learning levels will prepare students to immerse themselves in language while
expanding their fluency, confidence and passion for Spanish. Parents are welcome to join in this learning experience!

Snow Sports
Snow Sports is a winter term class that is for the student who needs and wants to be outside everyday. We spend every afternoon on the slopes of Crystal Mountain enjoying the beautiful Northern Michigan winter. This is a great class for those that are experienced skiers and riders as well as those beginners who have the desire to learn. We will head to Crystal Mountain every day right after lunch. This will also be your afternoon activity. We will also be studying about the ski industry, general strength and conditioning and skiing and snowboarding techniques. Students are required to have their own equipment in good working order and wearing a helmet is required. There will be a cost (to be determined based on this season’s prices) that covers your Crystal Mountain season ski pass, transportation to and from the hill and supplemental food costs.

A Personal Look at World War II
We’ve all heard of Pearl Harbor, Normandy, and Adolf Hitler. But have you ever wanted to take a more in-depth look at the event that changed not only the course of world history forever but the lives of normal people? This class will explore how World War II affected everyday people through films like Ken Burns’ The War, shows like The Band of Brothers, novels set during World War II, and diaries and interviews with people who lived through it. Of course, we will study historical events, but we will always look at them through a more personal lens.

Song Writing
This is the class for musicians, poets, and those who always dreamed of writing songs. Next, we will take all of these skills, work together in small groups, and put them into the wonderful art of songwriting. Prior experience on an instrument would be wonderful, but not required. I am looking for those with a creative spirit, willingness to try new things, those open to playing any style of music and an interest in working with others. We will end our term with an opportunity to share our songs with the Leelanau community in our Celebration of Winter Term.

Let’s Talk About Pop Culture
Popular culture is defined as “contemporary lifestyle and items that are well known and generally accepted” and “cultural patterns that are widespread within a population.” Sounds boring, right?
Wrong! In this course, we will explore and experience the dance, music, literature, art, movies, and fashion of the last 50 years of the 20th century in America, leading right up to the new millennium when you all were born. Issues like celebrity, kitsch, fads, and icons will also be explored as well as the practices and beliefs of each time period. At the same time, we will discover how the historical events contributed to and were influenced themselves by popular culture. We will learn about the people who developed pop culture as well as the consumers who devoured it. Expect to dress up, get down, and get psyched! It will be totally gnarly!
