Student Activities
We believe that a big part of our students’ lives at The Leelanau School is the ability to explore a variety of social experiences. Most teenage students learn a great deal through the vehicle of social awareness and peer interaction. While they may need adult guidance from time to time, much of our Students Activities program is generated by the students for the students.
Our weekend program of activities is coordinated by the Coordinator of Student Activities who works with our Student Activities Board (SAB). The SAB generates ideas and produces a monthly schedule of weekend activities that are advertised a month in advance for students and their parents. Our weekend activities are different by design each weekend. The program helps to encourage students to take some healthy risks in trying new and different activities which helps the students investigate new interests and enjoy these experiences by participating with their peers. Our Academic Faculty along with administrators serve as drivers and chaperones for these off-campus trips.
Our Student Activities program also develops and implements clubs that occur during the week in the evenings. These clubs are designed around student and teacher interests. Each Club also works with the weekend activities program by offering an activity during one weekend a semester that will feature a facet of their club. This program not only helps to encourage student interests but also help the students develop some leadership possibilities as they teach others about their interest.
Our Student Activities program also helps run our Thunderbird Café which meets in the Karman Activity Center three evenings a week. The Student Activities Board members help staff this Café experience which offers not only food & beverage but also a social time for our students on campus. The proceeds of the sale of items from the Thunderbird Café also go to the Student Activities Fund which helps defray costs for campus activities.
