Serving The Leelanau

Community

Community Bards

“The Leelanau School is here to make learning visible. To learn something new is great. To develop a talent is wonderful. It proves we can overcome trepidation with resilience. But things only have value if they can be shared. Pots of gold never spent are not worth the jars that hold them. So making visible to others the wisdom you have collected is an act of courage and generosity. And that is what keeps the experiment of humanity rolling on this planet.” – Rob Hansen, Head of School

Serving the Community

At The Leelanau School, we are part of a small community but believe we can make a big impact on our world. We are eager to share our joyful learning traditions and beautiful campus with others as our school schedule allows.

The following are a few of the spaces and ways we connect with our neighbors, friends, and campus guests.

CAMPUS RENTALS AND EVENT PLANNING

Our campus has spaces that make it ideal for family reunions, weddings, sports groups and other organizations. We can rent facilities from a conference room, dining hall, dorms, cabins and even our beach. Each summer we host weddings, university teams and high school clubs in our cabins and dorms. With the endless activities, quality food service and comfortable facilities, The Leelanau School makes a great location for many events and organizations. Plan your next event at The Leelanau School – we have so much to offer!

Situated on the Leelanau Peninsula in Northwestern Michigan, the Leelanau School sits on 42 acres of a beautiful landscape of woods and Lake Michigan beach with the Crystal River running through the middle. A truly idyllic setting snuggled up against what Good Morning America called the “Most Beautiful Place in America”.

Your ideal wedding may be large or small. The ceremony may be simple or elegant. It’s up to you at Leelanau. We’d love to show you all the possibilities for your special day.

For additional wedding information, visit our weddings page or contact Rob Dymond about rates and availability at 231-334-5812 or eventsandrentals@leelanau.org.

The COOK LEARNING COMMONS provides a versatile conference or classroom with seating for up to 100 participants. Convenient media set-ups and comfortable seating make presentations, group discussions, and casual conversations possible.

THE LEELANAU DINING ROOM and deck accommodate large and small parties and provide stunning outdoor views. Dine in style!

THE KARMAN ACTIVITY CENTER (The KAC) is a cheerful and comfortable space for meetings, casual gatherings, and wedding staging. A small attached kitchen assists with catering needs.

THE LEELANAU SCHOOL AUDITORIUM is a gathering spot for classes, performances, and community meetings. It can accommodate as many as 140 guests and is ideal for chamber ensembles, poetry readings, and small theatrical productions. Leelanau is currently fundraising to secure updates for sound, lighting, film, webcasting, and beautification. We are eager to lend this space to our neighbors and community as our school schedule allows.

Tennis Courts

LEELANAU’S TENNIS AND PICKLEBALL COURTS. The community is encouraged and welcome to play on our four beautiful courts, lined for tennis and pickleball! Our courts were resurfaced in 2014 through a Glen Lake Parks Department grant.

FINDING THE COURTS. When you enter campus, you will see a small sign on the right directing you toward the tennis courts. There is parking near the courts, windscreens, benches, and even scorecards.

Please follow standard court rules and etiquette. We are excited to have you visit!

THE BEACH BARDS BONFIRE has hosted guests on the Leelanau School Beach for over three decades, entertaining humans of all ages on the Leelanau School Beach. Frequently led by Norm Wheeler and Anne-Marie Oomen, the public is invited to come and share their own By Heart Poetry, Stories, or Music—or simply enjoy the experience of a community bonfire on the shores of Lake Michigan.

The Beach Bards begins at 8 pm with a Children’s Hour. Admission is $1 per being.

Summer dates can be found here.

Visitors may park in any Leelanau School lot and walk down the scenic boardwalk, across the Crystal River, to the bonfire circle or adventurous types can walk in from the beach near the Lanphier Observatory boardwalk.

On a clear night, LEELANAU’S LANPHIER OBSERVATORY inspires students and visitors to reach for the stars! The Observatory’s location along the Leelanau School Beach delivers the perfect setting for a star-filled sky, made even more visible by our 14″ Celestron Telescope. Learn more about our public viewing hours and education opportunities here.

Beach, Roadside, and Parks Clean Up

Students participate several times a year in beach clean up, not just on the school’s shore, but on local lakes and shores.

Piping Plover Program

In Cooperation with the National Parks Service, Leelanau School students volunteer to protect one of Michigan’s Endangered species from extinction by protecting the nesting sites of the Piping Plover.

Community Volunteers

Students and faculty are proud to assist the National Park System, the Leelanau Conservancy, Leland’s Fishtown, and area food banks and shelters with special projects and volunteer jobs. If you have a need, let us know how we might help.

Sharing our Talents
