This class will be a survey of storytelling through a variety of media and techniques. The class will also investigate the history of visual storytelling and explore structures and methods for organizing and framing stories. Topics will include but are not limited to: page layout and narrative, graphic novels, cartooning, sequential art, video editing, time-lapse video, animation, and scrapbooking. Students will have the opportunity to craft individual projects to suit their interests and inspirations while exploring a variety of approaches to storytelling. 1/2 Arts Credit Instructor: Kaz McCue

Do you love food? Do you love working with and learning about food? Do you love EATING food? Then this is the class for you. Food is Love will not only teach you some basics of cooking, but it will also help you to appreciate what it takes to create healthy and tasty dishes. We will work quite a bit with our very own chefs in the Leelanau kitchen, researching and creating menus, baking delicious desserts, and learning the culinary basics. In addition, we will go on field trips to local favorites like Oryana, The Cheese Lady, Stonehouse Bakery, Grocer’s Daughter Chocolates, and Fustini Oil and Vinegar. Watching The Chef’s Table and reading a variety of food blogs and articles will round out this exciting course. Register for the Needles and Thread course to exercise your creativity during Winter Term 2019. Expect to improve your sewing and knitting skills while working on your own personal projects for yourself or someone you love. We will be utilizing videos, instructional demonstrations, and field trips to strengthen your hands-on knitting and sewing skills. Come join me, it will be fun! Popular culture is defined as “contemporary lifestyle and items that are well known and generally accepted” and “cultural patterns that are widespread within a population.” Sounds boring, right? Wrong! In this course, we will explore and experience the dance, music, literature, art, movies, and fashion of the last 50 years of the 20th century in America, leading right up to the new millennium when you all were born. Issues like celebrity, kitsch, fads, and icons will also be explored as well as the practices and beliefs of each time period. At the same time, we will discover how the historical events contributed to and were influenced themselves by popular culture. We will learn about the people who developed pop culture as well as the consumers who devoured it. Expect to dress up, get down, and get psyched!
