Postsecondary Advising

choosing-college-leelanau

At The Leelanau School, we work with students to prepare them for successful and meaningful lives in higher education, careers, citizenship, and service. We embrace students’ unique learning styles and we understand that there is no “one size fits all” path to success in the classroom and beyond.

The postsecondary planning process at Leelanau is individualized, holistic, and strengths-based. While our curriculum is college preparatory in nature, we understand that there are many ways to find purpose after high school. Starting freshman year, students are introduced to a variety of postsecondary pathways, including attending university or community college, entering the workforce, participating in a gap year program, pursuing a career in the trades, setting-up an internship, etc. For upperclassmen in particular, the school guidance counselor works closely with students, families, and learning specialists to help support students in developing a postsecondary action plan with a clear timeline as well as a delegation of tasks and responsibilities.

For those applying to college, we provide guidance for students and families with regard to tools, resources, and fit. Specific examples of support provided by the school guidance counselor and the senior learning specialist include help with setting-up, filling-out, and navigating the CommonApp; transcript requests; college essay composition; reference letters requests; etc. We also offer on-campus administration of the PSAT and SAT during the fall and spring semesters for those who would like to participate.
