Visual Arts Teacher

The Leelanau School is seeking a VISUAL ARTS TEACHER, beginning in Fall 2022, who can work collaboratively in our independent environment while adhering to the high expectations of the program. The Leelanau School is a refreshing environment for educators who recognize the benefit of smaller class sizes, and are seeking greater professional freedom from standardization and compliance based instruction. Candidates must be creative lesson designers, enthusiastic about the arts as an essential aspect of a quality education, responsive to the needs of individual learners, and maintain a caring atmosphere by building positive relationships with students and families.

Teaching at Leelanau:

  • The Leelanau School is a 9th-12th grade fully independent co-ed boarding and day school.
  • The Leelanau School was founded in 1929 on the principles of small class sizes, broad and enriching curriculum, and experiential learning. 
  • All students are supported by a Learning Commons program, integrating course work and developing effective executive functioning skills for the lifelong benefit of the students. 
  • Exploration of the Arts is central to our mission.
  • Frequent use of our Lake Michigan shoreline, wooded campus, adjacent Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore, and involvement in nature is a core component of teaching and learning. 
  • In addition to planning and delivering daily instruction and assessment, Leelanau teachers are expected to engage with students for the benefit of their positive social-emotional development and extracurricular involvement. 
  • Leelanau is a staff lead organization. All school faculty members are invested in the stewardship of The Leelanau School, and participate in decision-making related to curriculum, policies, and activities of the greater school and its mission.

Requirements:

  • Respect for learners and a passion for their social, emotional, and intellectual development.
  • Bachelor’s degree (or higher) in Education, the Arts or related field.
  • Practiced in a variety of instructional strategies to develop passionate and courageous  experimenters, communicators, and artists, through all forms of medium (drawing, painting, sculpture, metals, fiber, digital, photography)
  • Enthusiasm for designing curriculum, planning lessons, differentiating instruction, and conducting authentic assessments.
  • Demonstrated instructional agility to develop student’s interests and skills in social development, critical thinking, creativity, and cultural awareness.
  • Commitment to emergent curriculum, experiential methods, and integration of the greater community and outdoors.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate with teams to develop curriculum, deliver instruction, support individual students, and advance programming.
  • Willingness to engage in the school community beyond the classroom and periodically chaperone student activities, 
  • Excellence in communication (verbal and written; formal and informal).
  • Respect for parenting and inherent partnership between school and home.
  • Additional instructional expertise in other fields of interest is desirable. 
  • Successful clearance of FBI background checks.
