At The Leelanau School, we offer day and boarding students in grades 9-12 an educational experience where integrated learning support, individualized attention, small classes, and a commitment to whole-person wellness are at the center of what we do.

Students discover and develop their strengths as both students and citizens with the guidance of engaged faculty committed to cultivating a school where students know and embrace themselves as learners – no matter how they learn.

A BETTER WAY TO LEARN

Experiential Learning

Academics

Academics at The Leelanau School go beyond hands on. We engage all your senses in learning to include kinesthetic, visual, and verbal learning. Through our methods, students are immersed in the learning experience. When you go out to collect data from the Crystal River for Biology class, you will not only be asked to note what the instrumental readings are, but also what you observe through sight, sound and smell.

Music, Visual Arts & Theater

Photography and Darkroom
Ceramics
Improv
Singing and Songwriting
Applied Design
Musical Theater
“Mighty Snappy” Band

You don’t have to come with a talent, we will help you discover and develop your talents.

Health & Wellness

The Leelanau School feels that students need to develop healthy lifestyles for their lifetimes. Our overall wellness program is designed around this premise by providing activities and guidance.

You won’t find fatty, fried foods in our cafeteria line.

Our Biology, Sustainability, and Ornithology students had an opportunity to volunteer for the National Park Service today. The piping plover protection program is a big deal in these parts. I remember working years ago with a group of students doing that - so much fun!

"I have spent a relatively large and especially impactful portion of my life with the Leelanau School and gotten particularly close with a lot of staff and students. With such an influx of different people, there have been lots of opportunities to practice my personal life so that I could hone it into something I could actually manage. The biggest challenge was learning how to accomplish things with the methods that worked best for me and still compliment my stubbornness to do things with the utmost quality. I don’t know if many people actually realize how hard that is, to make the extra time to do things the right way while still getting things done (mostly) on time and then to teach yourself later how to do it even better and more efficiently. It is a never ending cycle of upping the quality and trying to shave down the minutes. The crazy part is that every walk of life from this place has contributed to helping me reach my goals.

I found that out at Warren Wilson College (where I’ll be heading in the fall) when I was sitting in on a GenEd course that I already learned most of the information from freshman Biology with Mr. Blondia. I was still asking questions, more questions than most of the students there at first, but I noticed my confidence, enthusiasm and engagement was seemingly transferred to some of the other people because they started joining in on discussions too. That moment was only possible because Mr. Blondia is just one of so many great examples of the teachers here who make me feel confident and capable.

Leelanau has given me this sense of security to build myself up with that confidence, a sense of awareness and good ethics with so many beautiful souls to surround me. This is a place for people who nourish themselves and each other with encouragement, hospitality, hugs and the dark, ugly truth… that none of us have life totally figured out and we are just going to have to keep trying. My mom always told me that life would be a lot more boring if everything was perfect, I think she might be right." - Sara House, Class of 2024

Today is National Inspiring Joy Day. Gratefully, our Leelanau School faculty works hard to do that every day for our students. We'd like to spread this inspiration and opportunity to more students, no matter their financial circumstances. If you have the resources to help Leelanau build our financial aid and scholarship program, please do! All contributions, large and small, support this joy-full cause.
